AGE - Age in years as of last birthday.  For infants, age may be stated in days, weeks or months.                       
                                                                                                                        
ANNULMENT - Legal invalidation or voiding of a marriage, which confers on the parties the status of never having        
been married to each other.                                                                                             
                                                                                                                        
DEATH - Permanent disappearance of any evidence of life at any time after live birth.                                   
                                                                                                                        
DIVORCE - Final legal dissolution of a marriage.                                                                        
                                                                                                                        
FETAL DEATH (STILLBIRTH) - Death prior to the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of          
human conception, with 20 weeks or more gestation and/or weighing 350 grams or more; the death is indicated by          
the fact that after such expulsion or extraction the fetus does not breathe or show any other evidence of life,         
such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical  cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles.              
Heartbeats shall be distinguished from transient cardiac contractions; respirations shall be distinguished from         
fleeting respiratory efforts or gasps.                                                                                  
                                                                                                                        
INDUCED ABORTION (Induced termination of pregnancy) - Intentional termination of pregnancy with the intention           
other than to produce a liveborn infant or to remove a dead fetus.                                                      
                                                                                                                        
INFANT DEATH - Death of an individual under one year of age.                                                            
                                                                                                                        
LIVE BIRTH - Complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of human conception, irrespective            
of the duration of pregnancy, which, after such expulsion or extraction, breathes or shows any other evidence           
of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary               
muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached.  Heartbeats shall be               
distinguished from transient cardiac contractions; respirations shall be distinguished from fleeting respiratory        
efforts or gasps.                                                                                                       
                                                                                                                        
LOW BIRTH WEIGHT BIRTH - Any liveborn infant whose birth weight is under 2500 grams (5 1/2 pounds).                     
                                                                                                                        
MARRIAGE - Legal union of persons of opposite sex.                                                                      
                                                                                                                        
MATERNAL DEATH - Death attributable to delivery or the complications of pregnancy, childbirth or  the                   
puerperium.                                                                                                             
                                                                                                                        
NEONATAL DEATH - Death occurring to an individual less than 28 days of age.                                             
                                                                                                                        
OCCURRENCE, PLACE OF - County and state where the event occurred.                                                       
                                                                                                                        
POSTNEONATAL DEATH - Death occurring to an individual 28 days of age or more, and less than one year.                   
                                                                                                                        
RACE - Recorded as the individual states on certificate for mother, father or decedent.                                 
                                                                                                                        
RESIDENCE, PLACE OF - County and state of usual place of residence.  For births and fetal deaths, usual place           
of residence of mother is used.  Residence may be different than mailing address.                                       
                                                                                                                        
SPONTANEOUS ABORTION (MISCARRIAGE) - Termination of pregnancy through natural causes and without the aid of             
mechanical or medicinal agents, with the duration of pregnancy being less than 20 weeks gestation and weighing          
less than 350 grams.  (This definition was effective with the 1983 events.  The weight was changed from 500             
grams to 350 grams on July 28, 1995.)                                                                                   
                                                                                                                        
UNDERLYING CAUSE OF DEATH - Disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading  directly to           
death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury.  The cause of death            
codes used in this report are from the International Classification of Diseases,  9th Edition (ICD-9).                  
                                                                                                                        
WEEKS GESTATION - The period of gestation (length of pregnancy) is the number of completed weeks elapsed between
