Live Births
Arkansas had 39,219 resident births in 2005.

-- 5.5% of all resident births occurred outside the state of Arkansas

Birth Rate: 14.1 compared to a U.S. rate of 14.0 (births per 1,000 population)

There were a total of 5,742 births to teenagers (15-19) 

-- The number of births to teenagers decreased by 174 from 2004 to 2005

                  -- 14.6% of all live resident births were to mother’s aged 19 and under

                  -- Of all these teen mothers, almost 75% (4,304) were unmarried

Percent of Births to Unmarried Mothers: 40.2% (15,780 births), compared to a national percent of 36.4

Percent Low BirthWeight: 8.8 compared to a national rate of 8.2

                        -- 3,468 babies were born weighing less than 2500 grams (5 ˝ pounds).
10.7 percent (4,195) of all Arkansas resident live births were born to mothers of Hispanic origin.

21.8 percent (8,567) of all births were to mothers with less than a high school degree or equivalent

78.44 percent (30,764) of mothers received prenatal care in their first trimester, compared to 83.9 nationally (37 States only).

Fetal Deaths

Arkansas had 282 Resident Fetal Deaths (> 20 weeks and/or > 350 grams)

The leading cause of fetal deaths resulted from “Conditions Originating in Perinatal Period”, comprising 89.3% of the total (252 deaths).

The fetal death rate was still higher for blacks (12.0) than for whites (6.2).  The rate for whites have decreased from 6.4 in 2004 and the rate for blacks have increased from 10.8 in 2004 (rates are per 1,000 live births plus fetal deaths).

 

 

 

Infant Deaths

There were 316 infant mortalities to Arkansas residents in 2005.

The Arkansas infant mortality rate was 8.1, compared to a U.S. rate of 6.8.

Black Arkansans had an infant mortality rate of 15.5, compared to a white rate of 6.5.

Approximately 61.70% (191) of the 316 Arkansans who died before their first birthday were less than 28 days old (neonatal deaths).
