Immunizations

Vaccines are the safest way to protect you, your children and your community from a long list of serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. The primary goal of the Immunization Section is to control and prevent the spread of diseases that are vaccine-preventable by providing vaccines to 94 local health units and over 500 non-health department facilities in Arkansas. Immunization doesn’t just protect the person getting the shot; it protects the entire community.  By getting shots on time, you can protect your child and yourself from disease and protect others at home, daycare, school or work.  Here you will find vaccination recommendations for children, teens and adults.  For daycare and school immunization requirements for attendance, see Frequently Asked Questions

Preventing Flu in Arkansas

The Immunization Program joins other programs within the Arkansas Department of Health in working with external partners to address health issues in Arkansas.  More specifically, the following goals and strategies have been developed to increase life expectancy through efforts to prevent influenza, or flu.  The Immunization Program will also be required by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, to develop a five-year strategic plan by 2015 that will include flu and pandemic flu planning and strategies for prevention.

The Arkansas Department of Health along with local volunteers has already made great strides in preventing flu by providing mass flu clinics in every county since 2004.  There have been over 1,100 school-located flu clinics held statewide each year since 2009.  Further working with faith-based organizations, health care workers, and daycares and with other organizations to provide flu clinics should strengthen current efforts to prevent the spread of flu in Arkansas.
