Stroke Impact

Arkansas ranks first in the nation for stroke mortality and in an average year, more than 78,000 Arkansans suffer strokes.  The following statistics indicate the burden of stroke in our state:

  • 2013 - 4th leading cause of death in Arkansas 
  • 2007- Arkansas ranked highest in the nation for stroke mortality rate
  • 2009- Direct hospital charges for stroke totaled $219 million

The following chart shows a comparison of stroke mortality rates by county across the state.  Note that each of the mortality rates below is per 100,000 residents. The map also shows the location of hospitals across Arkansas which are members of the Arkansas Stroke Registry and hospitals which are primary stroke centers:
