Q: What is the definition of a Taxonomy code?

Answer: The health care provider Taxonomy code is a unique, 10-character, alphanumeric code that allows a provider to identify a specialty category. If you still have questions regarding taxonomy code, please contact HP at 1-855-661-7830.

Q: When is the Taxonomy code needed?

Answer: When providers apply to the NPPES for an NPI, they will be notified if they require a taxonomy code. If the provider requires a taxonomy code they are required to submit their taxonomy code when they bill their claim. If the provider does not require a taxonomy code they will not submit a taxonomy code when they bill their claim, that field will be left blank. Providers may have one or more taxonomy codes associated to them. If a provider is required to report a taxonomy code when using the Web-based NPI reporting crosswalk tool, only one taxonomy code can be chosen regardless of how many taxonomies were reported to NPPES. If you still have questions regarding taxonomy code, please contact HP at 1-855-661-7830.

Q: Why is the Taxonomy code needed?

Answer: BreastCare will use a taxonomy code only to match an NPI to a legacy Arkansas Medicaid provider ID during EDI processing. No payment processing will be completed using the taxonomy code. If you still have questions regarding taxonomy code, please contact HP at 1-855-661-7830.

Q: How to use the Taxonomy code?

Answer: If the provider bills their claims on the paper BreastCare claim form then they need to physically enter the taxonomy code in section 1a of that claim form. If the provider bills electronically using DDE then they need to physically enter the taxonomy code under the Billing, Performing and/or Referring Provider Information fields. If the provider bills electronically using PES it will automatically plug when the provider sets up the provider ID numbers. If you still have questions regarding taxonomy code, please contact HP at 1-855-661-7830.
